Crochet Pattern Maker

Turn a photo or drawing into an editable crochet color chart. Set stitch width and your gauge to estimate the finished size, review row-by-row color counts, and print the chart. The tool creates a grid reference, not complete written crochet instructions.

Features

Explore what this workspace can do, how each control affects the result, and which export fits your next step.

Convert a picture to chart cells

The image is sampled into a bounded grid in your browser. Cell width controls stitch columns; the chart keeps the source proportions.

Set your own gauge

Enter stitches and rows per four inches. The size estimate uses those values and chart dimensions; it is not a substitute for a swatch.

Edit and count the chart

Paint individual positions, review color totals and inspect a row at a time before printing.

Print a colorwork reference

The printable chart shows the cell grid and row sequence. It does not generate complete written stitch instructions.

Make a crochet colorwork chart

Use the square grid as a color-position reference, then size it with the gauge from your own swatch.

Load or sketch a motif

Use the starter motif, upload a local image, or paint over the chart.

Choose width and gauge

Set the stitch columns, then enter the gauge measured from your yarn, hook, and swatch.

Review rows and print

Check the color totals and approximate dimensions, then print or save the chart as a PDF.

Read the chart as color positions

Each square marks one position in the color chart. The chart is useful for planning a tapestry-style motif or a graphghan image, but it does not tell you which stitch pattern, turning chain, or edge treatment to use.

A photo can contain more detail than a crochet grid can hold. Start with a clear subject, compare a few grid widths, and edit small regions that need a cleaner outline.

Use gauge to estimate the finished size

The estimate converts chart columns and rows using the stitch and row gauge you enter. If the gauge is 16 stitches and 20 rows per four inches, a chart 32 cells wide and 40 rows high estimates to 8 by 8 inches.

Yarn, hook, stitch choice, tension, and blocking can change the finished fabric. Make a swatch and use its measured gauge when dimensions matter.

Crochet pattern maker questions

Can I turn a photo into a crochet chart?

Yes. Upload a PNG, JPG, or WebP image to create a color-position grid. The image is processed in your browser.

Does this tool write a complete crochet pattern?

No. It creates an editable color chart. Choose the stitch, edging, turning method, and written instructions for your project separately.

How do I estimate the crochet chart size?

Enter your stitches and rows per four inches. The displayed dimensions are calculated from those inputs and the chart size.

Can I change individual chart cells?

Yes. Select a color and paint cells directly on the chart. The preview and color counts update as you edit.

Can I use this for a graphghan?

The chart can be used as a color-position reference for a graphghan. Confirm that its grid and stitch method match the construction you plan to use.

Will the printed chart include row counts?

Yes. Print view includes row labels, the color key, and per-row color sequences.

Are the finished dimensions exact?

No. They are estimates based on your entered gauge. A swatch is needed for a reliable project measurement.

Which image files can I upload?

The editor accepts PNG, JPG, and WebP images up to 20 MB.

Does the tool save my chart online?

No. The source image and chart remain in the current browser session. Download or print the result before leaving.

Can I make a chart without uploading a photo?

Yes. The page opens with an editable sample; paint cells or replace it with a text or image motif.
